The Ride
Because the park sits at a higher elevation and is further from town than Arches, it feels more remote and significantly less congested, making it a favorite for riders who prefer the open road over traffic. The park has four distinct sections, two of which cannot be accessed on a motorcycle.
Island in the Sky is a "Y" shaped route that clings to the top of the mesa, offering wide roads with sweeping curves and massive pull-outs for taking in the scale of the landscape.
Must-visit locations include Grand View Point Overlook at the very end of the road and the Shafer Canyon Overlook, where you can peer down at the winding dirt trails far below. For the park's most iconic shot, take the easy half-mile loop walk to Mesa Arch. If you arrive at sunrise, you can watch the bottom of the arch glow with a brilliant neon orange light.
On the other fork of the road, you will find Upheaval Dome, a strange geological crater that is well worth the short hike to the rim.
Accessing the Needles district requires you leave Isand in the Sky and ride south past Moab to access it. There you'll find the Newspaper Rock hieroglyphs as well as several quality hikes and overlooks.
The Maze district is one of the most remote an inaccessible areas of the United States and requires extensive backcountry survival knowledge. The Rivers district is for floaters; it encompasses the Green and Colorado Rivers.
Fill your tank in Moab before embarking on a ride through Canyonlands. The Island in the Sky scenic drive is 34-miles round-trip from the Visitors Center, which is 33 miles from downtown Moab
Because you are on a high mesa with minimal tree coverage, the sun and crosswinds can be intense
The Shafer Trail: Unless you are an experienced off-road rider not afraid of heights, we suggest you view this trail from the paved scenic road lookouts.
The White Rim Trail: This moderate to difficult trail requires advance backcountry permit reservations.
The turnoff to Deadhorse Point State Park is located just before the National Park entry booth, in case you are looking to add to your itinerary
