If you plan on sleeping in a hammock during the early spring or late autumn season, an underquilt is a necessity for overnight comfort. The Sunbird is a versatile, down-insulated layer designed to stop the wind and cold from pulling heat away from your back, which is the most common reason for a bad night's sleep in a hammock.
Why We Like ItWhile it is primarily an underquilt with a "cinch" suspension system for easy setup, it also functions as a camp throw or even a wearable cape. It uses 500-fill-power, RDS-certified duck down, providing a 20°F comfort rating that covers most mountain and desert nights in Utah. The 20D nylon shell features a PFAS-free water-resistant treatment, which is critical for protecting your insulation from morning dew or light mist. Comfort rated to 20°F (-6°C).
Notes
The biggest mistake new hammock campers make is thinking a sleeping bag is enough. When you lay in a hammock, you compress the insulation under you, leaving your back exposed and leading to a cold butt. This underquilt hangs underneath the hammock, allowing the down to stay lofted and trap heat against your body. You will still need a top layer, either a sleeping bag or a lofty camp blanket.
